Are You Suffering from Goal Depression?


Can you be suffering from goal depression? When you think about your goals, do you feel:

  • sad,
  • irritable,
  • hopeless,
  • listless,
  • guilty, or
  • worthless?

Don’t give up on your goals. There are fixable reasons why your goals have you feeling down.

You Feel That You Have Failed at Achieving Your Goals

Your goal depression may be a PERCEIVED failure on your part. Let’s say you had a goal to pay off your $10,000 credit card debt in 2017. Now you are at the end of the year and you only paid off $1,500. In your eyes, you have failed. However, did you consider that you only had $150 per month in disposable income?  You actually succeeded in 2017. Your goal is achievable—your time frame was unrealistic.

Your Goals do not Align With Who You Are

One of the top five regrets the dying has expressed is not being true to who they are. When you do what others expect of you instead of following your true calling, you lack the inspiration that is needed to get you through the challenges that come with achieving your goals.

Your Goals are too General

Some people’s goal in life is to be happy. Sounds like a good goal right? Maybe not. What does it mean? How do you break down happy into steps?

A general goal can bring on goal depression and you would do much better with a specific goal. For instance, if you discover you are miserable at your current job, then a better goal would be to find a new job in 6 months.

You Don’t Know how to Approach your Goals

Some people set great goals but they are not sure how to approach their goals. There are several techniques that can help you with your goals.  You can attend a workshop or even get one-on-one help with a therapist or a coach.

Do something different in 2018—take control and ownership of your goals. Get a great support system in place. The best cure for goal depressions is goal achievement.
